About Blue Skies Space
Blue Skies Space is breaking the current bespoke, publicly funded model for astronomy and astrophysics missions and employs a commercial approach to create new opportunities for cutting-edge science. We offer telescope time on cost-effective and quickly delivered scientific instruments for users worldwide through a service-based model. Our first satellite, Mauve, will characterise stellar objects and flares in the UV and visible wavelengths. Our second satellite, Twinkle, will carry unique instrumentation designed to analyse the atmospheres of planets orbiting distant stars, as well as objects in our own Solar System.
Job Summary
Blue Skies Space is seeking a Junior Payload Engineer to support the wider engineering team and member scientists across our various science programmes. The engineer will support design analysis and design decisions as well as support the engineering team in presenting the engineering performance to member scientists.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the development of the optical design for our payloads
- Support the management of industrial suppliers developing, integrating and testing the payloads
- Support the software and science teams in modelling the performance of the payload
- Support the presentation of payload performance to scientists
- Ensure that the payload test plans are thorough and support test campaigns
Key Requirements
Essential requirements for the role are:
- MSc in Optics or an equivalent degree with optics as a studied subject
- Ability to simulate complex designs in Zemax
It would also be desirable for the candidate to have:
- Relevant industry experience
- Whole payload lifecycle experience
